Fiber recruitment: why hard sets matter for growth

Size principle and motor-unit recruitment — why hard sets matter, in plain language.

Muscle isn’t one switch — it’s a pile of motor units. Need more force and larger units tend to come online (size principle). That’s why easy sets can under-stimulate.

Slow vs fast twitch — don’t oversimplify

We talk Type I (more endurance) vs Type II (more force/hypertrophy potential), but fibers are a spectrum and training shifts traits. “Just grow fast-twitch” is marketing. Practical: make sets hard enough that high-threshold units get recruited.

What to do in training

  1. Keep working sets around RIR 1–3 (app beginner default ≈ last ~2 reps) for recruitment and tension
  2. You don’t need failure every set — repeat high-threshold stimulus with weekly hard sets
  3. Technical failure on compounds risks learning and injury — leave a little room
  4. Don’t expect slow tempo or pauses as a recruitment magic trick; look at overall overload

Bottom line

Fiber-recruitment talk lands in the same place as Health Helper’s other topics — mechanical tension, effective reps, RIR. Repeat challenging tension on the target, in a recoverable amount. Muscle is not one switch.
